Animals of WWIi
Animals had been used in battle for years before World
War II. Horses were the most common animal used. Horses were used for
transporting artillery and to some extent, the troops. There were millions of
horses employed during the war, many of which died. Pigeons are also known for
their service in war. Carrier pigeons, also known as messenger pigeons, were
used to carry messages. The Dickin Medal was presented to thirty-two carrier
pigeons for their service in the war, putting into perspective how important
they were to our success. Exploding dogs were the unlucky bunch of the animals
used in the war. Yes, they literally did blow up. These canines were trained to
carry explosives on their bodies to enemy takes, where they would then explode.
As sad as this is, there’s no doubt that animals played an important and hugely
helpful role during the war.
